Peas
When picking your peas and if you're pleased with them, save some of your best pods by placing them on a flat plate on a sunny window ledge for approximately 1 week till the pods are dry. Shell the peas, leave on plate and give them a shuffle every day and within 2 weeks they will be perfectly dry. Store in an envelope in a cool dry place
When removing pea foliage (haulm) cut off at ground level leaving roots in the ground as they are a good source of nitrogen.
The pea foliage can be dug in where next year's onions are to be grown.
Onions
Now is the time to harvest your onions. Begin by using a fork to partially lift the onions so that most of the roots are broken.
Leave for a few days then the crop. Clean all the soil from the roots and remove any dead foliage from the bulbs. Dry the onions by hanging in bunches in a dry airy shed or greenhouse
This year has been a difficult year for onions as many have succumbed from “downy mildew” which destroys the foliage. (see the picture of my onions below). To salvage the crop, cut off the foliage, remove all dead skins from the bulbs, remove all soil from the roots and store the bulbs in a greenhouse if possible. With luck they will store OK.
There are no chemical treatments available to amateur gardeners to prevent or cure the downy mildew. Next year why not consider varieties that are resistant to the disease, HYLANDER, SANTERO and GOLDEN BEAR.
Weeds
It's harvest time at the allotments. Beetroot, onions, peas and cauliflower will have been harvested by now. Swedes, brussel sprouts , late cabbage and leeks will be maturing nicely.Growth appears to be slowing down.....BUT NOT THE WEEDS. Annual weeds grow at an alarming speed at this time of the year. They will choke the ground in a very short space of time if you ignore them. Look at the picture. There are potatoes below this mess ..... I think. Pull/dig up the weeds before they run to seed and choke your remaining vegetables. Don't thrown them away. Put them in the compost bin They make excellent compost. However, weeds like docks and couch grass should be dug up and removed from the site.
Planning
It’s coming to the end of the allotment season - time to plan ahead for next year.
Disease and pests are often a problem on allotment site. Commonest and diseases include club root which affects all brassica plants, potato blight, downy mildew on onions and mildew on pea haulms.
As part of your planning for next year why not grow varieties that are resistant to the above diseases.
Blight resistant seed potatoes are fairly easy to buy but seeds of onions, peas and brassicas which are resistant to downy mildew, club root respectively, are not readily available in the local shops. Get yourself some seed catalogues and you will find all that you wish for to keep disease at bay. Always rotate your crops.
